We spoke to Translink UK M&A Manager Jack Laflin as part of our ‘Meet the Team’ blog series. Jack gives us insights into his day-to-day job, his biggest achievement at the firm, and tells us about what he likes to do outside of work.
What is your role at Translink Corporate Finance UK and when did you join?
I am an M&A Manager and joined Translink UK in September 2022.
What is it about Translink UK that you love being a part of?
One of the best things about working at Translink is working alongside experienced and knowledgeable professionals. We have a great workplace culture and I always feel confident to talk to any of the Partners for their advice and support.
I like that I’m always learning from those around me and that there are always opportunities for growth and progression.
I really value the opportunity we have to build connections with our Translink colleagues from around the world. Not only do we work with them on a day-to-day basis, but we also meet face to face at our bi-annual Directors Meetings.
Can you tell us a bit more about your day-to-day job at the firm and what your responsibilities are?
My day-to-day job varies depending on the stage of each mandate. My role currently involves reaching out to prospective buyers and dealing with any queries that they may have.
Another significant aspect of my job is conducting research for UK mandates as well as supporting our international colleagues on theirs.
If you had to pick – what are your highlights and biggest achievements whilst working with Translink UK?
My Translink highlight and biggest achievement to date has to be receiving the first offers for a project that we had been working on for a long time.
There had been some delays in the process and to finally see some progress was really rewarding.
Do you have any role models and, if so, who and why?
My parents are my role models as they have both worked hard throughout their lives. They both came from humble beginnings and have gone on to successful careers.
Their attitude to work has certainly inspired me to forge a career for myself.
What advice would you give to your younger self when starting your career?
I would say keep working at it and listen to the advice of colleagues and those around you. All your hard work pays off in the end and you will always be learning, so don’t ignore constructive feedback.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love attending live sports events, whether that be football, rugby, or racing.
Unfortunately, though, my football team is Reading, and they are not providing too much enjoyment at the moment!
What is your favourite TV box set or film?
The first series I properly watched was Suits so would have to say that. I also enjoyed Game of Thrones.
What is your favourite restaurant to go to? Your favourite cuisine?
Fortunately, I like most cuisines and my favourite can change by the week!
In terms of local restaurants, my favourite is Alchemilla in Nottingham.
What/where is the best place you have ever visited and why? Where is your dream destination?
I went to Sorrento last year with my girlfriend and we loved it. It has everything you could want – great food, people and weather. I will certainly be going back.
